Fantasy Comes Alive

JK and I went to watch Fantasy Comes Alive yesterday evening and it was a fairly entertaining way to spend an evening. Although I knew only the Final Fantasy songs in the setlist, I still quite enjoyed listening to a live performance. The choice of songs was quite interesting as I don’t think they chose to play the major theme songs that everyone would know (with the exception of the Neon Genesis dunno-what theme song).

I’ve been lucky enough to have attended both Video Games Live and Play! when I was in Australia and it really was quite awesome to hear a full orchestra and choir play songs from games and I enjoyed both concerts greatly. Fantasy Comes Alive was clearly a much smaller scale concert but it was still a good experience.

Especially with the tetris game. I never knew you could do all those in tetris! Perhaps that is why I sucked so badly at it.

FF8 & 9 on PSN

FF9 is coming to PSN and FF8 is already on it. I want to play both games. I just need to figure out how to download US content with my Asian PS3. I now have a US PSN account and with my brand new PSN card, I’m ready to go shopping! :D

Ooh! They have FREE Dynasty Warriors Empires DLC!

Anyway, I have fond memories of these two games. FF8 was my introduction into the JRPG genre and was the game that I played because my then-not-yet-bf was playing (erm, yeah …). Until now, I still think FF8 has the best final battle. In fact, I have reloaded my save game just before the battle several times just to play the final battle. Also, limit breaks were a lot of fun, especially Squall’s and Zell’s. FF9 on the other hand had my favourite mini games – chocobo hot and cold / treasure hunting. I like them mainly because they were one of the few mini games I was actually good at. Plus, as one guy says, it had Vivi and nothing is more awesome than Vivi.

So yeah, instead of completing my FF13, it looks like I might be distracted by FF8 instead! Or maybe I should go conquer the whole of China first …

It’s the small things

I can’t remember if I’ve blogged about our new management before. Suffice to say it’s a breath of fresh air and even though you know that nothing is really going to change so quickly, you can’t help but feel a little hope in the air. Now, after requesting for it for years (from what I hear), we finally have dress-down Fridays. So it’s jeans to work for me! And this little change alone has managed to lift the spirits in the staff room, at least for a while. Still, I don’t know if it is able to keep the mass exodus of teachers at bay though.

Every year, my school gives out an award to a number of teachers who have been voted by their students as being “outstanding”. To be honest, it isn’t really a fair competition. The students are expected to give a write-up of the teacher they are voting for and many times, I know some classes and some students simply can’t be bothered to write anything. A lot of students end up voting for their form teachers as well so it often comes down to the write up. Whatever it is, it’s probably not a good idea to let this award affect your teaching.

Having said all that, when I was given that award last year, it was quite a nice feeling. What was even better was when I opened my dip tray today. After many, many months, the award committee finally passed us the write-ups by our students and it was really a lovely read. Aside from feeling really touched by what some of my students wrote, I also ended up feeling quite guilty because honestly, I am no where as wonderful as they claim. I think this came at a pretty good time since I’ve been feeling somewhat blah about my job lately.

Speaking of the small things, is it really difficult to make your Intranet compatible across browsers? I don’t like IE6 at all and for some reason, we are not allowed to upgrade our IE from that. I’ve been using FireFox and Chrome but the Intranet does not work at all on these browsers. Very annoying!

Lastly, you know what I love most about FF13 (which, yes, I have started playing)? It’s the almost negligible load times. I hate load times.

Some Random Thoughts

  1. Got hold of FF13! Yay me! Except I haven’t actually started to play it yet because I figured I would be a good teacher and do stuff like marking and setting exam papers. Still, the fact that it is sitting there waiting for me to play it makes me happy inside.
  2. A long time ago I blogged about being a female fan. This stupid, sexist facebook page is why I don’t usually tell others I game.
  3. Did I mention I got Disgaea 3 as well? Yeah it’s a little late and goodness, are the graphics crappy. So that’s yet another game to play. Plus I really, really want to conquer China in DW: Empires. So many games, so little time. :(
  4. I have this really long blog post about females in pop culture that I’ve been writing for weeks. At the rate it is going, I’ll never finish it.
  5. I miss my blog.

Round-up of Today

Today was fairly eventful, at least by my standards.

Free Comic Book Day

So I reached GnB at 1215pm. Only 15 minutes after their doors open and already, Love and Capes and TMNT were finished! So no Love and Capes for me. Sad. However, I did get some free comic books including Blackest Night, Archie, Avengers etc. I also bought Deadpool classic.

Illuma Bugis

We visited the new mall @ Bugis. Now quite as populated as the new Tampines 1 mall though. Shops were nothing new and most of them weren’t open anyway. Poked around in Otaku House and Comic Connection but I couldn’t find any nice handphone straps. I really want one to replace my broken tonberry.

17 Again

Watched 17 Again at The Cathay. I really enjoyed it and to Mer – I think Zac Efron’s sooooo cute now! I’m trying to deny it though so probably never going to bring it up again. The movie was entertaining enough although it was nothing great. Typical body-switch show, but the eye-candy? :)

Arsenal

When I was at Bar None on Thursday, I was compelled to watch a replay of the Man Utd-Arsenal CL match on some big screen TV there. Depressing. Today, after many months, I watched an Arsenal match live. Well, yes, they weren’t really in that much danger of losing to Pompey I guess but it was nice to watch them win. And who the heck were those players on the bench? I must have lost touch with Arsenal for too long.

Paris Hilton’s BFF

In between the Arsenal match, I watched parts of Paris Hilton’ BFF reality show. It was like a car crash – horrifying but I could not look away. There are no words to describe it.

Some crap happened with regards to work as well today but I’m not going to blog about it. Let’s keep this a happy day.

Random Pop Culture Ramblings

I tape Law and Order every Monday (all varieties) so I can watch them at my leisure throughout the week. It’s easy to watch and fairly entertaining plus I enjoy procedural dramas. Interspersed between my show are advertisements for Crusoe. In fact, in any advertisement block, I would see at least two ads promoting Crusoe. And the more I see them, the more I wonder what kind of show this is.

In the first place, I have no idea why the island is overrun with visitors. Surely if everyone is jaunting off to the island for a little R&R and some treasure hunting, someone can get Mr Crusoe off it? I suppose, perhaps, they all hate him or have no space for him on their cramp little ships.

Secondly, it seems that Mr Crusoe has a way with his hands, what with all the fancy gadgets he builds. Again, why is he not building a ship? Why spend his time building ziplines? Ok ok. I know that you need more than a ship to get off an island – a compass maybe – but I don’t see him trying very hard to get off the island.

Thirdly, why do all the pirates look like Captain Jack Sparrow?

And last of all, how come his man-pal, Friday can speak so many languages?

Of course, all this is based on my limited experience with the show. I’ve not seen an episode at all. I could be completely wrong and there are perfectly good reasons for everything that happens (or does not happen) on the show.

In other news, it seems that one of the screenwriters of Watchmen has written an open letter imploring people to watch the film again.

All this time, you’ve been waiting for a director who was going to hit you in the face with this story. To just crack you in the jaw, and then bend you over the pool table with this story. With its utterly raw view of the darkest sides of human nature, expressed through its masks of action and beauty and twisted good intentions. Like a fry-basket full of hot grease in the face. Like the Comedian on the Grassy Knoll. I know, I know…

You say you don’t like it. You say you’ve got issues. I get it.

And yet… You’ll be thinking about this film, down the road. It’ll nag at you. How it was rough and beautiful. How it went where it wanted to go, and you just hung on. How it was thoughtful and hateful and bleak and hilarious. And for Jackie Earle Haley.

Trust me. You’ll come back, eventually. Just like Sally.

Apparently, I really want to be tortured, violated and so on. And I would come back for more. I don’t know how to point out how disturbing this is. Does he think that Sally really wanted to be raped deep down inside? And that is why she returned for more?

Well, I hate dark shows and dark heroes. I also hate, hate, hate Rorschach. It’s not cool to be twisted or to be violent no matter what the reason. Dark, disturbed people should not be heroes. They aren’t doing good because it is the right thing to do. They are doing it because they think it would cleanse their past. And when did darkness become such a great thing anyway?

I don’t like how all these “darkness” is all the rage nowadays. In all honesty, the open letter is just another reason I would not watch Watchmen again.

To end this long post on a positive note, I adore my new PSP! I can watch movies on it and yesterday, it made my journey home from Orchard such a pleasant experience. So yay to my PSP! And I will conquer FFT eventually. Doesn’t matter that I didn’t manage it years ago on the PS. I’ll do it on my PSP!
