Superman died for our sins

I’ve tended to avoid writing about religion because of how sensitive it can be in Singapore and the fact that I know a number of people who occasionally read my blog are religious.

Still, the idea that the Westboro Baptist Church has decided to go picket at Comic-con (why am I not there?) was vaguely amusing. It became even more amusing when I saw the response of the Comic-con attendees this morning. It’s things like this that makes me quite fond of fan culture.

Here’s a pic I snagged off Comic Alliance. Click on the link above to see the rest of the hilarity.

On a similar note, I want to go to Comic-con! It looks fun and this year, Merlin is there as well! One more reason to not be a teacher …

Iron Man 2

I finally got round to watching Iron Man 2 today. I didn’t re-watch Iron Man 1 and aside from remembering that I quite enjoyed it and that Pepper Potts is pretty cool, I don’t remember much else of it. So, I don’t know, if like some have said, if Iron Man 2 is less enjoyable than the first one.

I do know that I enjoyed it quite a bit, especially after the first quarter or so of the show. Frankly, RDJ is great in such rows and I think I am very likely to be tempted to watch any movie with him in it. And Pepper Potts is just as cool. I’ve always loved the people in superhero comics who aren’t the heroes with fancy gadgets or powers but who hold their own nonetheless, people like Lois Lane and now Pepper Potts (or at least the movie version of her). Black Widow was pretty good as well although, unless they are planning to use her in the Avengers movie, I think the movie could do without her. But then again, more kick-ass women in the chauvinistic comic world, the better. I wasn’t sure about the casting of Don Cheadle initially because I quite liked his predecessor, Terrence Howard. However, he grew on me so that was ok in the end. All in all, although robot fighting isn’t quite my cup of tea, the show was mighty enjoyable and well worth the money I paid.

Of course, the company was good as well. :)

Speaking of superheroes, Smallville has just ended its 9th season. I’m amazed it lasted this long really and despite my continual annoyance and disappointment with it, I am happy that there is a Superman show on television. So there will be a season 10 and hopefully it will be a good one to send off the series. Maybe Tom Welling will don the primary colours. Also, perhaps some cable channel would like to bring the show to Singapore sooner instead of screening seasons from many years ago.

Retro Party and other Random Stuff

It seems that my school’s grad night this year is going to have a theme – retro. I can’t decide if I should be sporting and dress the part or just ignore it, as I know some teachers might. I don’t think I have anything retro in my cupboards. Sigh.

Just finished watching the Arsenal match. I wonder if it was a special match or something. At any rate, it was nice to see Henry at the game. It was an interesting game though with 8 goals altogether. The commentator seemed to be watching a different match though. I think I must make the effort to catch all Arsenal matches this season. I doubt I’d be getting mioTV and I might not get the chance to see Arsenal in action after this. If mioTV gets the rights for the World Cup, I will be most annoyed.

I also watched Merlin and Smallville today. Both were pretty entertaining. I like the new season of Smallville generally although there are aspects that still annoy me. Still, this week’s episode was pretty cool. I know people were happy that Superman (I cannot call him the Blur) defeated Metallo with his brains but I wish there was more fighting. Merlin also needs more sword fights or jousting. Those are always fun to watch. None of that in this week’s episodes and that Mordred kid is really creepy. Just the same, Merlin is always silly enough, full of silly plot holes and completely cheesy enough to make me smile.

I still haven’t managed to get JK to help me sort out my comics though. They’re everywhere and I don’t know what to do with them! Was also quite tempted to pick up Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 but it costs a whopping $78! Must think about it a bit more. Why do I have such expensive hobbies? At least next season I won’t have to fork out $20+ per month for the Football Channel.

Oh and I read the latest Six Lives episode. It was even more boring than the previous one. Want something to read online? You can do better than Six Lives. My favourite website,  TV Tropes, is brilliant. It will probably suck your life away though.

This is why people think comics are for young boys

Solicit for Amazing Spider-Man #606:

Look out, Spidey! Hot on the heels of his old girlfriend’s trip home, The Black Cat’s back (and front!), sexier and more dangerous than ever! The deck is STACKED as the one woman that loves Spider-Man more than Peter Parker is up to some devilish shenanigans…and nothing bugs Spidey more than shenanigans! BRAce yourself for danger, Spidey! It’s gonna be …umm…sexy?

… sigh …
