Flying the Airbus A330 in X-Plane 12

This e-book is a guide to help you learn how to fly the default Airbus A330-300, which comes as one of the aircraft options in X-Plane 12.

Laminar Research’s A330 is a top-quality airliner and the most complex of all the default X-Plane 12 planes. However, it lacks any MCDU documentation at the moment, and there is no tutorial available except a reference document that shows where all the components are located. This e-book aims to fill that gap by providing a beginner-friendly guide on how to fly the Airbus A300.

The e-book is divided into two parts. The first part is a simple flight that lets you get a feel for flying this big aircraft. The flight gives you an idea of what’s involved and a sense of satisfaction that it’s not as challenging as it may seem.

This first flight is simplified, without using ATC, but still complex enough to give you a sense of what it’s like to fly an airliner. The focus of this flight will be on programming the MCDU (Multi-Function Control And Display Unit).

In the second part of the book, we will delve deeper and execute a complete flight from one airport to another. We’ll start from a cold and dark situation and end with a controlled descent and a CAT III ILS landing.

Essentially, the book has two purposes:

– to give you a taste of what it’s all about,

– and to give you a firm enough grounding that further study is no longer so daunting.

This e-book will not teach you how to become an ATP [Air Transport Pilot], but it will (hopefully):

• De-mystify some of the incredible complexity of these magnificent machines

• Introduce you to that frightening thing called a MCDU/FMC [ Multi-Function Control and Display Unit / Flight Management Computer] and help you tame it.

• At the same time provide you with step-by-step instructions to at least get you into the air (You might crash on landing the first time, though!)

• And have lots of fun doing it!

Also included are various X-Plane-specific tips, explanations and practical “How-tos”.
